After 21 years as Jupiter baseball coach, Doug Ferguson has retired.

If Rhea County High School graduate Cory Gearrin didn’t know major league baseball was a cold, cruel business before Tuesday afternoon, he painfully does this morning.

Veteran baseball fans around the world were saddened Tuesday by the news that slugger Harmon Killebrew has succumbed to esophageal cancer at the age of 74.

Father Time continues to overcome my boyhood heroes, and the news of Killebrew’s death touched me profoundly.
Killebrew, elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1984 after a stellar major league career, was one of the most popular players ever to don Authentic Buster Posey Jersey a Chattanooga Lookouts uniform. On many sultry summer nights during my teenage years I watched him use those powerful arms to pound prodigious home runs over the towering left-field wall at Engel Stadium.

“I have never heard anyone say an unkind word about Harmon Killebrew,” Ermer would often say.

Clark County commissioners on Tuesday are expected to sign an exclusivity contract with the owners of the Yakima Bears.

County Administrator Bill Barron said the contract states that the team will negotiate only with the county as it seeks to build a stadium and bring the Class A baseball team to Vancouver.
On May 13, owners announced plans to move from Yakima, where the team has the lowest attendance among teams in the short-season Northwest League.
The contract will be signed during the commissioners meeting, 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St.
